Calligraphy Journey

I have always been someone who loved learning skills that are fast paced. But calligraphy changed it for me, I love the slow pace of it and learning to embrace it. There's something relaxing about it, I don't have to worry about anything else while doing it. I only started it this year.

"Calligraphy is a kind of music not for the ears, but for the eyes."

— V. Lazursky

Through calligraphy, I am learning to slow down and learn with intention. .

"書道は心を映す鏡である。" (Calligraphy is a mirror that reflects the heart.)

— Japanese Proverb

Calligraphy Tools

笔 / 筆 (Bi / Fude)

I'm currently using a medium-sized brush for beginners.

墨 (Mo / Sumi)

Ink made traditionally from soot and animal glue. I use a simple liquid ink for beginners.

My Learning Journey

The beginning (November 2024)

My first real exposure to calligraphy was when I was documenting an cultural event in Sapporo as part of my internship. Some of the kind people in the stall let me try my hand at calligraphy, their welcoming nature made me feel at ease finally and try it without worrying about making mistakes.

Future Goals

There's no end goals to be honest, I just want to be able to write beautiful characters and also learn more vocabulary in Chinese and Japanese. I also want to learn more about its history.
